Beginning at 9:00 AM on Good Friday (March 21) the Gretna Community Garden Ministry will plant the 2008 summer garden. In addition to planting prepared seedlings of okra and squash, we will also plant tomatoes, pole beans, collards, peppers, cantaloup, corn, etc. The weather forecast is promising (clear skies with a high of 74), so please join us as we plant and pray for our second summer garden. The Community Garden Celebrates One Year of Ministry!

Jonathan and Harvey on the Tractor Preparing the Chicken Our Fearless Gardening Community
On March 17 The Shadetree Group celebrated the one year anniversary of the Gretna Community Garden Ministry. We had a wonderful time recounting the many ways God has blessed this ministry: fifteen committed shareholders; seven strategic partners; 1,200 lbs of organically-grown produce; and 85 qualifying families who enjoyed healthy food throughout the summer and fall of 2007. Many thanks to everyone who made the day a great success!

Each Thursday evening volunteers from Killearn UMC, Greensboro UMC and Gretna/Woodland Presbyterian Church kindly serve the Gadsden County Latino community through the English Language Learning Ministry (ELLM). The ELLM is a Shadetree Group initiative that teaches practical English skills to 30+ non-English-speaking students.

A Beautiful Day

What a beautiful day! The Spring Carnival benefitting Gretna Elementary School was a fantastic success. Over 150 volunteers from KUMC served alongside the teachers, staff and parents of Gretna Elementary School to host 400+ students and families. God blessed us with wonderful weather (mid 70s with blue skies) and an equally wonderful speaker, FSU safety Myron Rolle. A special thanks to all of our partners who made the 2008 Spring Carnival a success: Killearn UMC, Gretna Elementary School, CR Tallahassee, Premier Bank, Gadsden IFAS and Greensboro UMC.

On February 28th Kelly Williams of the Gadsden Community Healthy Start Coalition (GCHSC) honored the KUMC Quilters, led by Marge Davidson, created forty (40) sets of quilts and linens for Moses Baskets - small laundry baskets refashioned to safely accomodate a sleeping infant. The Shadetree Group is proud to have initiated this partnership between the KUMC Quilters and the GCHSC. However we are most proud of the KUMC Quilters and their commitment to prevent infant sleeping deaths in Gadsden County.
